Dark Woodwork Splendour

This is one of our older projects but since the dark wood is still quite popular, I decided to post some pictures from this job. I love dark woods, though they are not necessary the most practical for the entire house as it may show dust but never the less, dark finished woods give the home warmth, elegance and richness.

The house was a beautiful two storey home with a large basement that accommodated a beautiful family room with custom build cabinetry and a large rec-area with a custom build bar that were all finished with dark colour stain.

Dark stained cabinets stand out against the light wall colour.

In the upper floor of the home, a custom built bed fills this small space under the window (quite clever unless one would feel claustrophobic sleeping there :-)  was finished with a solid colour lacquer, same as the frames around the niches, window frames and baseboards. Light and practical choice for the small space.

Custom cabinets and shelves in the master bedroom stained and lacquered bring a touch of elegance and classy to this closet space.

Off-white colour lacquer on the trim in this bathroom keeps things light and airy and visually uncluttered with the use of light tones and colours.

Hope you enjoyed my little tour of a perfect example of using dark woods mixed with light finishes. Remember, having your heart set on dark wood doesn't mean you have to do all the same in the entire house. Finishing some of the trim and woodwork in certain areas of your home in a light colour lacquer will make the area more monochromatic, light and practical, not to mention more cost efficient. It is just like having best of both worlds.

TIP: For an off-white trim colour take your inspiration from the wall colour.

Until next time, enjoy making your home beautiful!

An open door…

Kitchen

…leads to a beautiful and open kitchen loaded with custom cabinetry. The customer wanted to soften the look so we finished the cabinets with a touch of glazing. A beautiful look for this kitchen and the home. Around the corner there is a Butler's Pantry, an extension of the main kitchen; truly this is a cook’s dream kitchen!

Hall    Fam. R.

Stained wood rail tops, post and bookcases on each side of the fireplace and the fire place mantle in the family room were finished to accent the rich hardwood floor anchoring the rooms.

Cornice mouldings finished with the same lacquer as the baseboards draw one’s eye to the painted ceiling.

 Laundry R.

Stained and lacquered upper and lower maple cabinets dress up the laundry room with their warm colour.

Closet

We finished the closet cabinets and shelves with the same lacquer as the baseboards for a clean, and very practical finish. A great and elegant look against the warm wall colour.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, the darker painted walls give this room the punch making the lacquered custom build cabinets, jewel boxes reflecting the light surrounding them.

I hope you enjoyed my little tour of this project.
Until next time, enjoy decorating with paint and don’t be afraid to try new colors. You might be surprized at what you will discover.

Mountain Retreat

One of our painting projects was this home in the mountains. Lots of fir and maple to finish (with stain and lacquer) and the result was wonderful to see…It gave the home its character worthy of the surroundings it has been built in.
